Umrah Ritual
Essential Guide to the Sacred Rites of Umrah
How do I enter the state of Ihram?
A Muslim enters the state of Ihram at the miqat (designated station) specified by Sharia. Upon entering this state, one must refrain from all actions prohibited during Ihram.
At this point, the Talbiyah is recited:
“Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-Ni‘mata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Shareeka Lak.”
(“Here I am at Your service, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise, blessings, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”)
Why are there special places (Miqats) to enter Ihram?
Out of respect for the Kaaba and the rituals of Hajj and Umrah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) set specific locations, called Miqats, where pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram before reaching Makkah. At these points, they begin reciting the Talbiyah.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“These Miqats are for the people of those places and for anyone who passes by them intending to perform Hajj or Umrah.”
The Miqats are located at different distances from Makkah depending on which direction pilgrims are coming from. Anyone traveling from beyond these Miqats—whether by air, land, or sea—must enter Ihram at or before passing them. They should not cross these points without being in the state of Ihram.
Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba)
Go to the Haram and start walking around the Kaaba with it on your left side, moving in a counterclockwise direction. Begin at the Black Stone and complete seven rounds, ending at the same spot. After finishing, pray two raka’ahs in any suitable place within the mosque.
Sa'i (Between Safa and Marwa)
Head to Safa and start walking towards Marwa. Reaching Marwa counts as one round. Walking back to Safa counts as the second round. Continue until you’ve completed seven rounds, finishing at Marwa.
Shaving or Trimming the Hair
After Sa’i, men shave or trim their hair at the barber shops. Women cut about 1–2 cm from the ends of their hair. This completes the Umrah and ends the state of Ihram.
Essential Guide for Pilgrims
Practical Tips and Key Landmarks for a Smooth Pilgrimage
Many gates lead to the courtyard of the Grand Mosque. Each gate has a specific number. Above each gate, a light panel, recognizable from a distance, displays either an entry or exit sign.
The five main gates of the Grand Mosque:
- King Abdulaziz Gate: No. 1 in the Western Square
- Bab Safa Gate: No. 11 in the direction of Sa’i walkway (Masaa)
- Bab Al Fatah Gate: No. 45 in the North Square
- Bab Umrah (The Umrah) Gate: No. 62 in the North Square
- King Fahd Gate: No. 79 in the Western Square
Hajj and Umrah pilgrims may bring and use their own wheelchairs in the Grand Mosque of Makkah provided that they enter through wheelchair gates.
Wheelchair pushing service is available in the Grand Mosque. Both hand-driven and motorized wheelchairs are available.
Zamzam water in the two Grand Mosques
Zamzam water is supplied in drinking water containers throughout the Grand Mosque of Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque, in two conditions: cooled, which is usually offered, and uncooled, which is marked.
Plastic cups are available for drinking. These are single-use cups. New cups are stacked on the right-hand side of each container and shall be disposed of in the bin on the left-hand side.
Shaving or Trimming the Hair (Tahlul)
After completing the pilgrimage rituals, it is part of worship to either shave or shorten your hair. Just as you refrained from cutting your hair while in Ihram as an act of devotion, shaving or trimming at the end is also an act of obedience and submission to Allah.
Shaving and trimming for men
It is prescribed for male pilgrims performing Hajj or Umrah to completely have the hair of their head shaven, or shorten all, or most of the hair on their head, the former is better.
Women can only cut a little of their hair
A woman can only shorten her hair, whether she performs Hajj or Umrah. She gathers her hair and cuts 1-2 cm of it.
Friday Prayer in Masjidil Haram and Masjidil Nabawi
The Friday prayer is one of the greatest and best prayers, and is even more in the Grand Mosque, where the virtues of time, place and worship come together so here are some important instructions:
- Avoid jostling and crowding that may cause harm to you and others.
- Be sure to go early to prayer, and avoid rushing out directly after the prayer.
- During the Friday prayers, doors are open to the roof of the Prophet’s Mosque.
- Avoid staying under the direct sun’s rays.
- The Friday sermon is translated into several world languages
Prayer in the Exalted Rawdah
Allah raises the stature of some places over others. The honorable Rawdah is one of the best and most blessed places that Allah Almighty has favored, and it is a garden of Paradise.
How to visit and pray at the honorable Rawdah?
Due to the large number of people wishing to pray in the Noble Rawdah, entry is regulated to prevent overcrowding. Our officials will schedule a specific time and date for the jemaah to enter the Rawdah in an orderly manner.
Visiting the Prophet's tomb
It is desirable for a Muslim going to Madinah to visit the tomb of the Prophet, (blessings and peace be upon him), and to greet him.
Rules of visiting the Prophet’s tomb
Visitors should maintain respect and proper manners. Voices should not be raised. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is to be honoured in both life and death. When offering greetings, stand close to his resting place, face the grave, and keep the greeting brief. Afterward, exit calmly and with dignity, allowing space for others to visit.
